Beginning farmers from across Northern California will gather in Grass Valley, March 3 & 4 for Sierra Harvest’s 2023 Sustainable Food and Farm Conference.  As farming becomes an increasingly challenging profession in the face of climate change, this conference will help beginning farmers build profitable businesses and create ecological resiliency.

Farmers will learn directly from regional experts with proven success, including Javier Zamora of JSM Farms.  Javier built his 1.5-acre business into a 200-acre diversified organic farming operation with 25 full-time workers, and he will share his essential practices for upscaling and building a profitable business.  

Amélie Gaudin, a leading agroecologist from UC Davis, will discuss new research to help farmers create more resiliency against climate change through plant diversification, livestock integration, plant selection and irrigation systems. 

Lisa Bjorn and Marney Blair of Fulcrum Farm, will provide a day-long workshop on how to create on-site farm composting system for building soil fertility, crop resiliency and the potential for a diversified income stream. In addition to these featured presenters, the conference will include a series of workshops from our local farming experts to help boost essential skill-building among beginning farmers, and a Food & Farm Expo for resource and information sharing among the farming community.
