4th Annual Fruit & Veggie Fest
On May 15, Nevada County Public Health and Grocery Outlet are collaborating on the 4th Annual Fruit & Veggie Fest. Part of a statewide effort to empower families to be Champions for Change by making healthy living a priority, the event will be held from 11:00am-2:00pm outside Grocery Outlet. The “Fest” is part of the Nutrition Education & Obesity Prevention Program (NEOP) funded by the California Department of Public Health.
Designed to give shoppers the tools and tips they need to bring more fruits and vegetables into their daily meals and snacks, last year’s event drew around 450 participants.
Thanks to donations by Grocery Outlet and General Produce, the event will include UC CalFresh blending up samples of vegetables and fruit smoothies…made on a human-powered bicycle blender. There will be water tastings that demonstrate how to add fruits, vegetables and herbs to good old H2O to make refreshing (and sugar-free) drinks and a food sample. Participants will receive recipe cards, a cookbook and shopping list tablet. This year will feature a “Snapshot of a Healthy You” Photo Booth that will engage people to promote what healthy activity they have integrated into their life though photo postings on social media. Come learn about a local garden program and more!
Nevada County, like all counties, is battling obesity, a public health issue that contributes to chronic disease; 21% of adults in our county are obese. Over time, increasing the amount of fruits and vegetables in our diet and decreasing the amount of sugary beverages we drink can lead to a decrease in obesity.
Grocery Outlet is a wonderful host providing the NEOP team with everything they need to create a lively, engaging event. Come out and “fest” with us!
