School Lunches Will Never Be The Same with “California Thursdays”

CEL_CAThurs_Orange_lo resOn March 17, ten thousand students across Western Nevada County will participate in a healthy new approach to school food: serving freshly prepared meals made with local and regionally grown foods. It’s part of an expanding statewide program called “California Thursdays” that does something incredible – serves California food to California students.

What seems like a no-brainer has actually taken months of preparation and the collective effort of 58 school districts and a leading advocacy group along with national, state, and local supporters. In a single day, Western Nevada County schools, led by Grass Valley and Nevada Joint Union School Districts, with the support of Sierra Harvest, will implement a program that defies a massive and entrenched food supply system.

Why fight so hard to cook from scratch rather than just heat-n-serve? Because our districts think it’s the right thing to do for its students. “California Thursdays” is a win-win-win for schools and students, local and regional family farms and producers, and the environment. In addition to providing fresh, delicious meals to students, it boosts their health and readiness to learn, improves the district’s budget, strengthens the local agricultural economy, and cuts carbon emissions.

On March 17, from 11:30 -1:00pm, participating school sites will serve up a fresh CA Thursday entrée as a taste test. Sierra Harvest farm to school liaisons will be on hand to pass out stickers and talk about the CA Thursday program launching in 25 area schools.  Here are the participating schools in the March 17th tasting:
