Meet Your Local Farmers
Cosmic Roots Ranch – Ellen Cole and Jesse Olson
Cosmic Roots Ranch was established 2015 by Ellen Cole & Jesse Olson. With a passion to farm, and create a space that the community could enjoy, they chose to primarily raise Mangalista pigs, which is a heritage breed originating from Hungary. Mangalitsa is considered to be the Kobe Beef of Pork, and definitely lives up to its name. You can find their pork at their ranch farm stand, and also locally at Mother Truckers & The Ham Stand. In addition to hogs, they also grow seasonal gardens, and make hand crafted soaps, candles and lip balms, deriving from the lard they refine from their pigs. They love what they do at Cosmic Roots Ranch, and hope to be a staple farm in the community for years to come.
Early Bird Farm – Drew and Sabrina Speroni
Early Bird Farm is nestled in the Sierra Foothills in Nevada City, California. The farm was established in 2014 using sustainable practices to grow the healthiest and most nutrient dense produce. Farmer Drew has a passion for stewardship of the land, supporting a healthy community, and raising a happy, healthy, God loving family. Early Bird Farm supplies local restaurants, bakeries, caterers, distributors and grocery stores with fresh organic produce and stone milled flours.
Lush Leaf Micro Greens – Cairo Cocalis
Cairo is a die hard plant nerd who can’t stop growing things and who also loves to eat and share beautiful food. Lush Leaf Micro Greens was a natural by-product of these passions. She is a local organic grower, right here in Penn Valley, and is growing seven varieties of delicious and nutritious greens. They can be eaten right out of the bag, made into fabulous salads, mixed with other salad greens to make them go further or added to all sorts of recipes. She harvests weekly and delivers to homes and businesses as well as having several centrally located ‘pick up’ refrigerators. The almost magical melding of flavors in the micro mixes are reason enough to enjoy them but knowing about the incredible nutrient density of these youngster greens makes them thrilling to share.
McClaughry Farms – Gary McClaughry
Mountain Bounty Farm – John Tecklin
Nestled along the Yuba River near Nevada City, CA, Mountain Bounty Farm grows a great variety of exceptional organic produce for our local community. They are the oldest and largest CSA farm in the Sierras, and they put tremendous care and skill into growing superb produce for our members. Farming with love and care since 1997, they aim to provide a reliable local source of the highest quality produce for our area, and to work towards the economic sustainability of our rural community. They also want the farm to be a place of inspiration and beauty, a place to reconnect to food and the joys of food culture. Their farming style and philosophy are very simple. By being very attentive to the land, the crops, and the weather, they can succeed at the very challenging art of growing good food. Their techniques involve time-tested organic farming practices that above all prioritize care for the soil. They make heavy use of cover crops, beneficial insectary plantings, compost and organic soil amendments. Mountain Bounty is certified organic by CCOF, however they see the organic standards as a starting point and believe that a much better job is possible. Their efforts and investments are rewarded with a bounty of exceptional produce and a farm that continues to improve year by year. Their produce is primarily distributed to their 750 CSA members, at the Nevada City farmer’s market, and at Three Forks, Heartwood, Stonehouse, BriarPatch Food Co-op, California Organics, Mother Truckers, and New Moon Natural Foods.

They will be selling flower CSA shares and maybe some bouquets and calendars.
Starflower Farm – Iris Vineyard
Starflower Farm is a small scale flower farm and design studio, located in Grass Valley, CA. Established in 2018, we take pride in using regenerative and sustainable farming techniques to grow a wide variety of specialty cut flowers.
