When I hear the words “pink slime”, I can’t help but think of some kind of goo that gets poured over contestants in a Nickelodeon show from the 1990s……..unfortunately that is not what i am referring to.
Last week ABC News learned that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will be announcing that starting in the fall, schools with have the choice weather or not to buy hamburger meat that contains, lean finely textured beef filler known as “pink slime”. YIKES!!
I certainly hope they choose NOT to use it, though some sources say that the the USDA recently bought 7 MILLION pounds of it to use in school lunch products!!
Shockingly, the beef filler that is know in the industry as pink slime, is found in 70% of ground beef sold in U.S. supermarkets! It has a texture similar to play dough and is certainly not what the average person would consider to be meat.
Not surprisingly, the Beef industry has denied that the pink slime is anything other than beef that would be wasted. Boneless Lean Beef Trimmings(BLBT) as the industry also calls the slime is actually “a sustainable product because it recovers lean meat that would otherwise be wasted.” Well take a look at the photo below and decide for yourself.
This is actually one instance when I WISH this were soft serve ice cream!!
Maybe this is just one more reason to make your own Lentil Patties instead of eating factory raised beef!
